No way! Glow-in-the-dark yarn?!

I came across Bernat's new line of glow-in-the-dark yarn on Ravelry the other day and my first thought was "shea, right -- and monkeys might fly out of my butt!" It probably glows weakly for a full three seconds and the only way you can actually see it in the dark is if you are right next to it.

But, I love Halloween and you can't honestly call yourself a crocheter who loves Halloween if you don't even bother to check out something as cool (in principle) as glow-in-the-dark yarn. So, I read some reviews and found out that the yarn had been getting a 3.5 out of 5 star rating on Ravelry. I also found this:
It really does glow in the dark! The texture is reminiscent of Bernat Satin – a silky shiny acrylic yarn. In comes in pure white and baby pastels: pink, yellow, green, blue, and lilac. In the colors, you can see the white glowing strand twisted around the colored plies. It would be a neat accent yarn for intarsia, but is soft enough make a beanie or entire sweater, too!
The consensus on Ravelry seems to be that the yarn does glow pretty well although the texture may not be appropriate for larger projects. Well, I just had to try it after that.

I ordered a few balls from Mary Maxim yesterday and am eagerly awaiting their arrival. If you're interested in trying it out, now is a great time, too. Mary Maxim is offering the yarn for $2.97 each (regularly $4.99). There are also some links to free patterns on the Mary Maxim site... I'm thinking of trying the ghost family when I get my yarn. I'll keep you posted with how it works!

  1. OMG I just bought a few of these last week! They really do work--we put them right up against the light (I made spider webs) and they glow pretty good. Great for Halloween!! Have fun :)
It is pretty squeaky, tho...have to admit I'm a yarn snob but it's ok because it's GLOW IN THE DARK!!
