Cute Cotton Kitty -to- Cotton Bear Amigurumi Hack

One of my favorite patterns that (in my opinion) never gets enough love is the Cute Cotton Kitty. Kitty was one of the first patterns I did with Knit Picks Dishie yarn and the foundation for my Cotton Critters Collection. I love Kitty's sunshiny smile and long legs and have done many color variations.

But there is one variation I do on Cute Cotton Kitty that has less to do with color and more to do with form -- in a snap, Cute Cotton Kitty becomes Cuddly Cotton Bear!

Some of you have asked, so I thought I'd post my own "hack" to change your Cute Cotton Kitty pattern over into a bear:

Ears
Instead of making the ears as described in the pattern, complete 2 ears using the following instructions:

Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round.
Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (12 SC). MM.
Round 3: *2 SC in first ST and 1 SC in next. Repeat from * around (18 SC). MM.
Round 4: *DECR across first 2 STS and SC in next ST. Repeat from * around (12 SC). MM.
Round 5: SC in each ST around (12 SC). FO, leaving a tail for sewing.

Muzzle
The muzzle is a new piece. Please note that round 3 will only be a partial round, but I found that if I went to the full round (18 SC STS), the muzzle looked too big.

Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round.
Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (12 SC). MM.
Round 3: *2 SC in first ST and 1 SC in next. Repeat from * twice more and FO, leaving a tail for sewing.

Note: Stitch a nose and mouth as shown above or use a plastic nose (the lovely Clara, of 6060 has some great options!). If using a plastic nose, wait until your head assembly to place it so you can put the nose post through both the muzzle and the head fabric.

Head
Follow the same construction as the Cute Cotton Kitty pattern for the head. When you get to Part 3: Head Assembly, sew the ears and muzzle as shown above. You can also (optionally) use a pair of 9mm eyes or stitch eyes in with black embroidery thread.

That's it! I hope you enjoy making up a Cuddly Cotton Bear or two!
