The end of the Angry Birds

It was a lot of fun while it lasted. I got to know people from all over the world and I got to share my patterns in a way that made people happy. But it's over.

On Tuesday, I was asked to stop selling the Angry Birds patterns. I cannot get into the details, but suffice it to say that I stand to lose more than just my business if I continue.

The patterns have been pulled from Etsy and pattern sales have been deactivated on Ravelry. They will not be re-listed or re-activated.

I will continue to sell my other original patterns in both venues and I have some new designs that should be released very soon. I am truly sorry to everyone who did not get the opportunity to get copies of the patterns.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

  3. What a shame. You've done such a wonderful job on these that they should be paying you for promoting them! Thanks for sharing your patterns - looking forward to seeing your other work.

  7. wow really -that's nuts! You got to them though because your patterns were so awesome!! It's the brighter way of looking at it! Though I'm bummed I didn't buy them when they were up for my "one day I will make these" pile :)
You could say it's a parody! Yesterday for some reason Brian and I were talking about this and we googled the laws - something about 2 Live Crew and the pretty woman song lol Brian remember from his childhood lolol

  8. Hang in there, Karla! Your non-Angry-bird patterns are awesome, too!

A story about your lanterns: I made the one with the sign "courage" for my 18-year-old nephew as he was fighting cancer. He passed away in April. I'm glad I was able to share the lantern with him during his last weeks. Thank you so much for the inspiring pattern.

  9. Your patterns are awesome. Sorry that they didn't appreciate that their are a lot of people that enjoy creating for our loved ones and really appreciated your designs. I made them all for my son for Easter and he loves them. Keep up the good work.

  10. thank you so much for yr pattern. It's so awesome. Actually, i plan to make a whole gang, so...how can i find more friend for my red bird...;(

  11. Oh! I'm so sorry to read this. As long as you're okay, that's all that matters. And I'm a dummy for not buying them when I wanted to!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Dang I was waiting for next week to get paid to get it! My girlfriend is a angry birds freak and i wanted to make her them. Now I'm bummed.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh no! I was just coming to buy Bomb Bird. Guess I'll have to make my own and buy something else.

  14. I am so sad that you did all that wonderful work and was forced to abandon it. Your patterns are awesome. You should have been commended for contributing to the Angry Birds' popularity, IMHO. I will definitely purchase more patterns from you!

  15. Wow. I am really sad that you cannot sell these anymore because you had said they were such a help to you! I think they are awesome and I am so glad that I purchased all of them!
You actually put me on your blog and I had made that video of my birds and was selling them on etsy.
I also have been asked to stop selling my finsihed birds. So no more selling for me but I still plan on making a bunch for people I know! :)
I look forward to seeing more of your other patterns.

  16. Bleah! Like so may others, I should have bought them all when I had the chance instead of buying them as I got time to make them. So sorry to be a procrastinator!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I look forward to seeing more of your original designs too! I hope doing the angry birds (from now on I'll refer to them as "annoyed avians") has gotten you more followers and more business in the future!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Does that mean we can't sell the ABs that we've made from those patterns? I have made them all and was going to put them up on Etsy. I've always wondered if it's copyright infringement to made and sell licensed characters like Disney and Mario Bros. I'm so sorry that you got dinged I'm assuming by the game maker. I'm glad I bought them when they first came out! {{{hugs}}}

  19. That's disappointing. I told my sister I was making a surprise for her and my nephew; I made the red bird and I was going to buy the patterns on pay day for the rest of the set.
I had to laugh when I saw Judy's comment, because my husband had just said, "Maybe she could still sell them if she called them Raging Avians."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Do you think if we wrote to the company and asked them to reconsider it would help? Maybe if you paid them a percentage of the profits or something. If they were smart, they would work something out with you and make them official patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was just about to purchase your patterns but I'm too late....or maybe not.
For anyone who's still interested in the Angry Birds patterns as I am, you could always send them an invoice from PayPal and once paid, email the patterns to them.
That said, could I purchase the patterns? Please! Please! Please!

    ReplyDelete
  22. You guys are seriously some of the best customers... strike that -- friends a gal could ask for! Thank you SO MUCH for your encouragement and support!

I know there are several ways that I could contunue to sell the Angry Birds patterns on the "black market," so to speak... but it's unfortunately just not worth the chance of being sued. I really am sorry to disappoint, but I have to be firm on not selling any more of the patterns. I hope you can all understand my position and I promise to crank out something new and delightful for you really soon!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I finally went to purchase them today and I a little sad! I love these and my kids love looking at them! I am sad that I missed out on them!

    ReplyDelete
  24. how sorry to here its sad that when you get inspiration for and design it your own way and you get in trouble for doing it. I am crochet sesame street characters now not sure if i should.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know you put your hard work into it but could you put them up for free? There is no money made from them. Therefore you are not profiting from it. (and maybe change their name)

But your need to add a donation button so we can donate to your awesome creativity!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I finally broke down and decided to buy the angry bird patterns today and now I can't :(. I missed my window. I'm sorry they did this to you, I read about your daughter below and how it has helped you financially. Aprilmayrd@aol.com

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is so very sad I was just going to buy them. I wanted to make them so very bad we love Angry Birds and yarn! Thank you, maybe I will have to try to figure it out on my own.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well pooh!!!!! I'm glad I bought mine when I did. & I'll be back to buy some of your other patterns. You are such a talented pattern writer. I haven't had a single problem with any of the patterns and I know that talent will be with any other patterns. Can you maybe change the patterns slightly and continue to sell them? Sad how big business can knock down the little guy. I agree with whomever said they should be paying you for the pattern!!!! hugglesssssssss

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh man! I just went to buy these so I could start on my son's birthday presents :( So sad that the patterns are now gone. :(

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sad face. I never got around to buying the green one and the white one. :( I'll have to figure out something for my 5yr old.

    ReplyDelete
  31. What the hey?!?! You even put the link to the Angry Bird Facebook page right in the PDF! The only thing I can think is that the crochet set is siphoning off the sales of the plushies? Because there are so many nerds that crochet? Your instructions are flawless, I'll be buying other patterns for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i agree with karynwaters.
this patterns was great. sad to hear about it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Im happy i was able to order before told to stop selling patterns. sorry to hear the patterns gone. love your patterns

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is sad. I love your patterns and they are so easy to read. Sadly I didn't get two of the patterns :( I will be getting more of your patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's sad, I prepared myself to start the first bird this weekend and just wanted to buy the pattern. But sure some knitting patterns are not worth being sued.

Note to myself: never wait to buy patterns you plan to knit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Are you also not allowed to give the patterns for free? Or are you choosing not to?

    Just curious, is all!

    ReplyDelete
  37. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I should have bought them when I had the chance. This totally bums me out big time. stupid people with all the power. these were awesome. :(

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm lucky I bought the patterns when I did. ;)

I'm so sorry you were forced to take them all down and everything. Thank you for making such great patterns though. I get such a reaction when ppl see that I made them. haha.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I too am wondering if you are allowed to "gift" the pattern. I tried to figure it out based on your wonderful pictures, but I am just not that talented...

Any clues you can freely offer would be wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I just came across your patterns and I have to say, they were the best I found.

Boourns to the people who asked you to stop.

    *shakes fist in the air*

    ReplyDelete
  41. This makes me so mad. I'm mad at myself also for not buying the Angry Birds patterns when I had the chance. You snooze, you lose, I guess. What really makes me crabby, though, is that on Facebook, Angry Birds has started posting a section of "fan art" that includes all kinds of crafty stuff, including crocheted pieces. They can't have it both ways, encouraging fans to create things and then telling people to cease and desist. So not fair.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can someone that bought the patterns kindly share them with me. And please tell me how much you paid for them so I can make a donation in that amount. My daughter wants me to make her some so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Really wanted these patterns :( My little guy loves Angry Birds and desperately wanted me to make him some when I showed them to him. I don't think I can figure it out on my own and yours look great. Sad you aren't allowed to sell them any longer. Would also love to have them....

    ReplyDelete
  44. OMG!
I only just found out about your unreal Angry Bird patterns and I can't get the pattern. This totally sucks!!!
You poor thing. Can't believe they would stop you!! :-(

  45. I am so sorry that you were forced to stop selling your patterns! They were really awesome. I work on alot of ami in my spare time at work and my boss asked me if I could make him angry birds to throw around the office at each other. I started googling for patterns and stumbled on your blog. All your patterns are fantastic!
The discontinuation of your angry birds has forced me to exercise my patterning muscles though so I will look on the bright side!

  52. I was one of the lucky ones who got the patterna dn had also been selling just the item. I have also been asked to stop selling them. I just started reading your blog, and wish I had started reading it sooner. I really enjoy your patterns. I have purchased more than just the birds, and am sure to get more in the future. I really just wanted to tell you that you are an amazing designer and that I am sorry that the company seems to want their cake and eat it too.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow, another fan who has a cease and desist order from the Big Company. Happened with another designer with the BBC. So sorry to hear that. I was lucky to get all the patterns when they came out. I have finished 3 of the 6 birds...then need to do the pigs.

  54. I missed out on these!
    I want them!!!!

You can't sell the "Angry Birds" anymore BUT you could change the colors and rename the patterns to "Annoyed Fowl" and put a TM on them and they are now your new creation!
If purchaser's of your patterns change the colors, that's not your fault! :)

Seriously! Do it so I can buy them!

  58. Please, please, please! Will someone who purchased these patterns send me a copy? Perhaps we can get back at the Corporation a bit by sharing with each other. I promise to share the patter with others, as well.

I, like so many others, chose to wait too long to purchase these. And now, without the help of those who were smarter than I was, I'll never get to make these for my grandkids.

    Please help.

  60. How about put them up for free, that shouldn't be a legal problem

    ReplyDelete
  61. I like Dave's suggestion. Make them in different colors, maybe add a character or two to the series, and change the names. I have dealt with copyright issues and patents, etc, in the cloth diaper world. It is unfortunate that corporations try to "flex their muscles" and force things that actually, legally aren't enforceable. Contact me if you'd like. My 2 foster sons were in love with these when they saw them and are so sad that I cannot get the patterns. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  62. I see so much Angry Bird things all over the handmade world. Why can't you keep your pattern going and use "inspired by" and "not affiliated with"??

    ReplyDelete
  63. Not fair! Your Angry Birds patterns are the best out there. Why are other people still selling their patterns of the Angry Birds online? sigh
Well, I hope you can get to sell them again in time. If you do email me.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree, you've done an excellent job with the pattern! Shame to see others out there selling them but you can't. But, I appreciate your honesty and integrity.

  79. Be very careful about sharing patterns and using names that are owned. This conversation is an example of the copyright police. I take my krochet kritters to many kraft fairs and have considered putting up a sign that sez "These are NOT Angry Birds; they're Krochet Kritters!" My husband thinks this is a bad idea, but if I modify the patterns....
    Thoughts?

  86. I made a hat of the green pig from Angry Birds and had posted one up on Etsy for sale. I got a cease and desist order as well. I mean really ... it's a green pig! And the pulls are so hit or miss. I know a half dozen people who have received the same notices, but then when you search on Etsy for the words Angry Birds, there are hundreds of people who are still happily selling the items without any problems. I don't understand how they pick and choose who to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  87. What a bummer! :( You did such an amazing job... if you do decide give them away as Annoyed Fowl :)

  101. I found your fantastic annoyed avians pattern about a month ago, bought them and made several, others needed for Christmas gifts you have by far the most accurate real looking birds that I could find. Am curious about the "powers that be" and why these were asked to stop being sold. The people with Angry Birds should be so pleased that everyone wants these. Do you think the Official Angry Birds people are going to issue their own crocheted patterns for their birds? Were they worried the crocheted ones would outsell their plush ones? I think it is great that 8pawcrochet is doing what she is doing. You know, it might be worth your time to write back to the people who asked you to stop, and offer to negotiate selling them your patterns, so you would win, and so would they. I tried to find an official FB page for the Angry Birds, but could not. I was going to ask them why they don't contact you and buy your patterns so everyone who wants to make them will be able to...they can still stipulate the pattern can only be used to make as gifts, not to sell. I am so sorry this happened to you. You are very talented, so please continue to write your great patterns, and try to see this as your patterns being so perfect they felt threatened by you. Hmm, which is why I think they should by the patterns from you, and I do not mean for the price of what others bought them for, but negotiate a price of steeling them your creativity. Good luck, I hope you continue to enjoy your creativity.

  102. Just checked out Etsy, found at least one selling a cardinal as Angry Bird, but all other were being sold on Etsy as Mad Birds, or Red Birds, or other such variations. Maybe it is the official name that was the problem. Check it out. It might be worth it to find out. I am just sorry you had to stop selling.

  103. I know when I got the cease and desist order from Etsy for my green pig hat they made a point of saying that I was not allowed to use the terminology or images related to the angry birds game. Etsy has just always been rather random about what items it removes and what they let slip through.

    ReplyDelete
  104. @ Rae, From what I remember reading through her blog she had consulted an attorney who basically said Rovio's pockets were deeper than her's and to let it go... she did. I obviously felt bad as well and that's where I stepped in and started 8pawscrochet to make sure that some not-so-nice person didn't start trying to take the credit Karla deserves. Ironically, earlier this year, the Rovio people posted a picture of a crochet pig (using her pattern) on their FB page and were seemingly impressed by the design... apparently those that manage their FB page are not aware of what their legal department is doing! Unfortunately, I think all we can do is support her the best way we can, and that's to make sure that the patterns are not distributed without Karla being properly rewarded!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Karla, I would like to buy your Upset Birds pattern for my own enjoyment. Would you please sell Upset Birds pattern to me? I would never ask it for free for something you have designed & the time spent doing it. Please label it properly because I want UPSET birds. Thank you.
