It was a lot of fun while it lasted. I got to know people from all over the world and I got to share my patterns in a way that made people happy. But it's over.
On Tuesday, I was asked to stop selling the Angry Birds patterns. I cannot get into the details, but suffice it to say that I stand to lose more than just my business if I continue.
The patterns have been pulled from Etsy and pattern sales have been deactivated on Ravelry. They will not be re-listed or re-activated.
I will continue to sell my other original patterns in both venues and I have some new designs that should be released very soon. I am truly sorry to everyone who did not get the opportunity to get copies of the patterns.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
I look forward to your new patterns. Thanks for taking the time to design them :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad but thanks!! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame. You've done such a wonderful job on these that they should be paying you for promoting them! Thanks for sharing your patterns - looking forward to seeing your other work.
ReplyDeleteyes it is such a shame i've just become a fan of angry birds and was going to buy the pattern.I'm sorry I left it too late
ReplyDeletelooking forward to your other creations
thank you for your work, Karla. i enjoyed your patterns tremendously and will be happy to continue to purchase your other original patterns when i can! you are an amazing crochet artist!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's sad, you did such a great job with the patterns!
ReplyDeletewow really -that's nuts! You got to them though because your patterns were so awesome!! It's the brighter way of looking at it! Though I'm bummed I didn't buy them when they were up for my "one day I will make these" pile :)
ReplyDeleteYou could say it's a parody! Yesterday for some reason Brian and I were talking about this and we googled the laws - something about 2 Live Crew and the pretty woman song lol Brian remember from his childhood lolol

:)
Hang in there, Karla! Your non-Angry-bird patterns are awesome, too!
ReplyDeleteA story about your lanterns: I made the one with the sign "courage" for my 18-year-old nephew as he was fighting cancer. He passed away in April. I'm glad I was able to share the lantern with him during his last weeks. Thank you so much for the inspiring pattern.
Your patterns are awesome. Sorry that they didn't appreciate that their are a lot of people that enjoy creating for our loved ones and really appreciated your designs. I made them all for my son for Easter and he loves them. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeletethank you so much for yr pattern. It's so awesome. Actually, i plan to make a whole gang, so...how can i find more friend for my red bird...;(
ReplyDeleteOh! I'm so sorry to read this. As long as you're okay, that's all that matters. And I'm a dummy for not buying them when I wanted to!
ReplyDeleteDang I was waiting for next week to get paid to get it! My girlfriend is a angry birds freak and i wanted to make her them. Now I'm bummed.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I was just coming to buy Bomb Bird. Guess I'll have to make my own and buy something else.
ReplyDeleteI am so sad that you did all that wonderful work and was forced to abandon it. Your patterns are awesome. You should have been commended for contributing to the Angry Birds' popularity, IMHO. I will definitely purchase more patterns from you!
ReplyDeleteSheryl
Wow. I am really sad that you cannot sell these anymore because you had said they were such a help to you! I think they are awesome and I am so glad that I purchased all of them!
ReplyDeleteYou actually put me on your blog and I had made that video of my birds and was selling them on etsy.
I also have been asked to stop selling my finsihed birds. So no more selling for me but I still plan on making a bunch for people I know! :)
I look forward to seeing more of your other patterns.
Ashley
Bleah! Like so may others, I should have bought them all when I had the chance instead of buying them as I got time to make them. So sorry to be a procrastinator!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing more of your original designs too! I hope doing the angry birds (from now on I'll refer to them as "annoyed avians") has gotten you more followers and more business in the future!
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean we can't sell the ABs that we've made from those patterns? I have made them all and was going to put them up on Etsy. I've always wondered if it's copyright infringement to made and sell licensed characters like Disney and Mario Bros. I'm so sorry that you got dinged I'm assuming by the game maker. I'm glad I bought them when they first came out! {{{hugs}}}
ReplyDeleteThat's disappointing. I told my sister I was making a surprise for her and my nephew; I made the red bird and I was going to buy the patterns on pay day for the rest of the set.
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh when I saw Judy's comment, because my husband had just said, "Maybe she could still sell them if she called them Raging Avians."
Do you think if we wrote to the company and asked them to reconsider it would help? Maybe if you paid them a percentage of the profits or something. If they were smart, they would work something out with you and make them official patterns.
ReplyDeleteI was just about to purchase your patterns but I'm too late....or maybe not.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone who's still interested in the Angry Birds patterns as I am, you could always send them an invoice from PayPal and once paid, email the patterns to them.
That said, could I purchase the patterns? Please! Please! Please!
You guys are seriously some of the best customers... strike that -- friends a gal could ask for! Thank you SO MUCH for your encouragement and support!
ReplyDeleteI know there are several ways that I could contunue to sell the Angry Birds patterns on the "black market," so to speak... but it's unfortunately just not worth the chance of being sued. I really am sorry to disappoint, but I have to be firm on not selling any more of the patterns. I hope you can all understand my position and I promise to crank out something new and delightful for you really soon!
I finally went to purchase them today and I a little sad! I love these and my kids love looking at them! I am sad that I missed out on them!
ReplyDeletehow sorry to here its sad that when you get inspiration for and design it your own way and you get in trouble for doing it. I am crochet sesame street characters now not sure if i should.
ReplyDeleteI know you put your hard work into it but could you put them up for free? There is no money made from them. Therefore you are not profiting from it. (and maybe change their name)
ReplyDeleteBut your need to add a donation button so we can donate to your awesome creativity!!
I finally broke down and decided to buy the angry bird patterns today and now I can't :(. I missed my window. I'm sorry they did this to you, I read about your daughter below and how it has helped you financially. Aprilmayrd@aol.com
ReplyDeleteThis is so very sad I was just going to buy them. I wanted to make them so very bad we love Angry Birds and yarn! Thank you, maybe I will have to try to figure it out on my own.
ReplyDeleteWell pooh!!!!! I'm glad I bought mine when I did. & I'll be back to buy some of your other patterns. You are such a talented pattern writer. I haven't had a single problem with any of the patterns and I know that talent will be with any other patterns. Can you maybe change the patterns slightly and continue to sell them? Sad how big business can knock down the little guy. I agree with whomever said they should be paying you for the pattern!!!! hugglesssssssss
ReplyDeleteOh man! I just went to buy these so I could start on my son's birthday presents :( So sad that the patterns are now gone. :(
ReplyDeleteSad face. I never got around to buying the green one and the white one. :( I'll have to figure out something for my 5yr old.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hey?!?! You even put the link to the Angry Bird Facebook page right in the PDF! The only thing I can think is that the crochet set is siphoning off the sales of the plushies? Because there are so many nerds that crochet? Your instructions are flawless, I'll be buying other patterns for sure.
ReplyDeletei agree with karynwaters.
ReplyDeletethis patterns was great. sad to hear about it.
Im happy i was able to order before told to stop selling patterns. sorry to hear the patterns gone. love your patterns
ReplyDeleteThis is sad. I love your patterns and they are so easy to read. Sadly I didn't get two of the patterns :( I will be getting more of your patterns.
ReplyDeleteThat's sad, I prepared myself to start the first bird this weekend and just wanted to buy the pattern. But sure some knitting patterns are not worth being sued.
ReplyDeleteNote to myself: never wait to buy patterns you plan to knit.
Are you also not allowed to give the patterns for free? Or are you choosing not to?
ReplyDeleteJust curious, is all!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I should have bought them when I had the chance. This totally bums me out big time. stupid people with all the power. these were awesome. :(
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky I bought the patterns when I did. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you were forced to take them all down and everything. Thank you for making such great patterns though. I get such a reaction when ppl see that I made them. haha.
I too am wondering if you are allowed to "gift" the pattern. I tried to figure it out based on your wonderful pictures, but I am just not that talented...
ReplyDeleteAny clues you can freely offer would be wonderful.
I just came across your patterns and I have to say, they were the best I found.
ReplyDeleteBoourns to the people who asked you to stop.
*shakes fist in the air*
This makes me so mad. I'm mad at myself also for not buying the Angry Birds patterns when I had the chance. You snooze, you lose, I guess. What really makes me crabby, though, is that on Facebook, Angry Birds has started posting a section of "fan art" that includes all kinds of crafty stuff, including crocheted pieces. They can't have it both ways, encouraging fans to create things and then telling people to cease and desist. So not fair.
ReplyDeleteCan someone that bought the patterns kindly share them with me. And please tell me how much you paid for them so I can make a donation in that amount. My daughter wants me to make her some so bad.
ReplyDeleteReally wanted these patterns :( My little guy loves Angry Birds and desperately wanted me to make him some when I showed them to him. I don't think I can figure it out on my own and yours look great. Sad you aren't allowed to sell them any longer. Would also love to have them....
ReplyDeleteOMG!
ReplyDeleteI only just found out about your unreal Angry Bird patterns and I can't get the pattern. This totally sucks!!!
You poor thing. Can't believe they would stop you!! :-(
I am so sorry that you were forced to stop selling your patterns! They were really awesome. I work on alot of ami in my spare time at work and my boss asked me if I could make him angry birds to throw around the office at each other. I started googling for patterns and stumbled on your blog. All your patterns are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe discontinuation of your angry birds has forced me to exercise my patterning muscles though so I will look on the bright side!
I absolutely love each of the patterns. You have a talent that should be rewarded!
ReplyDeletehttp://8pawscrochet.blogspot.com
Just my luck ): I found out about these and now that I want to make them this happened. ):
ReplyDeleteIf someone could pleaseeee send them to me it would be VERY much appreciated! Please anyone ): froggymabis [at] hotmail [dot] [com]
If ANY on has theses patterns could they please send them to me I am looking for something to make for presents for family and friends and I will still make a donation for the price you paid PLEASE xavier0908@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteDang! Just came across these today! Would love to make these! Anyone willing to share the pattern with me? I would be willing pay part of the price that you paid for them.
ReplyDeletemellyanne@gmail.com
So sad. I just found this today too, and would really appreciate if someone could share a copy, I am happy to pay as well. babybot23[at]gmail[dot][com]

ReplyDeleteI was one of the lucky ones who got the patterna dn had also been selling just the item. I have also been asked to stop selling them. I just started reading your blog, and wish I had started reading it sooner. I really enjoy your patterns. I have purchased more than just the birds, and am sure to get more in the future. I really just wanted to tell you that you are an amazing designer and that I am sorry that the company seems to want their cake and eat it too.
ReplyDeleteWow, another fan who has a cease and desist order from the Big Company. Happened with another designer with the BBC. So sorry to hear that. I was lucky to get all the patterns when they came out. I have finished 3 of the 6 birds...then need to do the pigs.
ReplyDeleteCora
I missed out on these!
ReplyDeleteI want them!!!!
You can't sell the "Angry Birds" anymore BUT you could change the colors and rename the patterns to "Annoyed Fowl" and put a TM on them and they are now your new creation!
If purchaser's of your patterns change the colors, that's not your fault! :)
Seriously! Do it so I can buy them!
Dave
So happy to see the support for you. Indeed, you shall be rewarded. Thanks for fabulous patterns!
ReplyDeletehttp://8pawscrochet.blogspot.com
Also I found this too late :(. I was looking forward to buying the patterns only to see you weren't allowed to sell them anymore. Would have made a great gift for my husband. Such a shame but not your fault of course!

ReplyDeletePlease, please, please! Will someone who purchased these patterns send me a copy? Perhaps we can get back at the Corporation a bit by sharing with each other. I promise to share the patter with others, as well.
ReplyDeleteI, like so many others, chose to wait too long to purchase these. And now, without the help of those who were smarter than I was, I'll never get to make these for my grandkids.
Please help.
Interested in supporting properly... email 8pawscrochet (at) gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHow about put them up for free, that shouldn't be a legal problem
ReplyDeleteI like Dave's suggestion. Make them in different colors, maybe add a character or two to the series, and change the names. I have dealt with copyright issues and patents, etc, in the cloth diaper world. It is unfortunate that corporations try to "flex their muscles" and force things that actually, legally aren't enforceable. Contact me if you'd like. My 2 foster sons were in love with these when they saw them and are so sad that I cannot get the patterns. :-(
ReplyDeleteI see so much Angry Bird things all over the handmade world. Why can't you keep your pattern going and use "inspired by" and "not affiliated with"??
ReplyDeleteNot fair! Your Angry Birds patterns are the best out there. Why are other people still selling their patterns of the Angry Birds online? sigh
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope you can get to sell them again in time. If you do email me.
Thanks
I agree, you've done an excellent job with the pattern! Shame to see others out there selling them but you can't. But, I appreciate your honesty and integrity.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have these patterns that can email them to me? My 3 years old wants "angry birds" from santa clause and I am desperate! I would be ever so grateful. My email is thehamfamily2009 [at] gmail [dot] com. Help!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. If anyone have these patterns, can you please e-mail them to me? I want to make them to my boy in birthday present. Hi loves angry birds :)
ReplyDelete<-little to fast.... my e-mail address is katrine.ramberg@trollfjord.no
ReplyDeleteOh no, I just found out about these today :( Would anyone be kind enough to send me the patterns? I'm sure we could work out some sort of exchange! My email address is melancholy421@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteJust found these today and my sister would have loved to have them for Christmas, but I'm not talented enough to make them without a pattern. Drats. They are/were awesome, though. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could be as talented but alas I too rely on patterns... If anyone has them could they share?? kdwlsn@gmail.com. I would be forever grateful as Christmas is coming so I can make some gifts!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI was interested in making these for my niece. Can someone send? tmugglin@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWould someone please send me a copy too? I would like to make it for someone special :) My email is ruix1990@hotmail.com Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat to see so many continue to be so supportive and willing to reward you! Your patterns are AWESOME. Those who can no longer buy them but want to be sure the author is properly rewarded should check out http://8pawscrochet.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteWould anyone be interest in passing these patterns on to me or selling them? My email is nathanieladam@nathanieladam.com
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry!! I needed the toucan one as my grandson asked me to find an angry birds pattern to knit!! I'm not as talented to design it for myself...Thanks for keeping the picture up. Your pattern was so cute!
ReplyDeleteI would to make the angry birds for my husband, who's a big fan. Could someone please send them to me as well? Thank you so much! star_grl2011@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteBe very careful about sharing patterns and using names that are owned. This conversation is an example of the copyright police. I take my krochet kritters to many kraft fairs and have considered putting up a sign that sez "These are NOT Angry Birds; they're Krochet Kritters!" My husband thinks this is a bad idea, but if I modify the patterns....
ReplyDeleteThoughts?
It's worth a try. I too would love to make these for my nephew if someone would be willing to share. My email is brinab [at] hotmail . [com]
ReplyDeleteI'm very sorry I missed this opportunity for my kids, who love Angry Birds. It really does seem counterproductive to encourage craftsmen on one hand and vehemently discourage them on the other. That said, if anyone would be willing to share the patterns with me, I too would be happy to donate. MyQTBunnies [at] Yahoo [dot] com
ReplyDeleteCould someone help me and share the pattern of the blue angry bird? Please please please...
ReplyDeletetaina[dot]tammelinlaine[at]gmail[dot]com
All the patterns are absolutely cute and I suppose the handmade birds are just good for the company. They really should be thanking you, Karla, and offering a contract.
That really sucks - i only got a change to get the red one and the pig :( I was really looking forward to doing the one with the egg too :( Bugger. Is there any chance that you could provide them free (as in not for profit?)
ReplyDeleteIf anyone could provide the patterns for me, i'd really appreciate it. My email is kylie.smith@me.com - my husband really wants them!!!
ReplyDeleteWere they going to *sue* you?
ReplyDeleteI made a hat of the green pig from Angry Birds and had posted one up on Etsy for sale. I got a cease and desist order as well. I mean really ... it's a green pig! And the pulls are so hit or miss. I know a half dozen people who have received the same notices, but then when you search on Etsy for the words Angry Birds, there are hundreds of people who are still happily selling the items without any problems. I don't understand how they pick and choose who to stop.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer! :( You did such an amazing job... if you do decide give them away as Annoyed Fowl :)
ReplyDeleteplease let me know or if anyone would happen to wish to send them to me I would greatly appreciate it thanks and again I am sorry they decided to pick on you!grandmafairymary@hotmail.com
WHat a shame.... I have looked everywhere for some patterns like these and u are the only one that looks amazing! they look so real i love them! my kids saw the pictures and wont stop asking me for them... If any one out there, Anyone at all would like to email me the patterns I would really really be very happy... I know it means u cant sell them to me but u could always give them away as a freebee and It doesnt count! my email address is jj_denboer@hotmail.com
ReplyDeletePlease if anyone would share I would be overly gratfull to not have to hear my children keep begging me to make these amazing toys.... thank you!
Jes (mother of 3 small children.)
Love these. yours are the only patterns that look the best, you did a great job designing them. wish you could still be selling them. I would get them in a heartbeat. if there is anyway I can get them let me know. amymuise at hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry too fore the lost of the pattern to sale. My husband he LOVES angry birds, Every day he must play that game, at least one hour.
ReplyDeleteYour birds are the best. you have done a great work.If there are someone who whants to share the pattern my mail are pialarsson61@gmail.com
i can understand. i have created items which look like popular items. remember your talents have no boundaries. keep up the good work
ReplyDeleteIs this someone selling your pattern on etsy?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/search/handmade?search_submit=&q=angry+birds+crochet+pattern&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US
I would gladly have paid for the pattern if you were still able to sell it. So please pardon my impertinence, but would it be illegal for you to give them away for free?
ReplyDeleteThese are by far the best Angry Bird crocheted toys I have seen. Is there any way we could work out for me to be able to get them? You can contact me at heatherboyer9@gmail.com. Thank you in advance!
ReplyDeleteWould anyone be willing to share the patterns they have? Our 6yr old son would be so grateful and excited (and me too)!!!! I would also gladly make a donation to help support the designer. I will keep my fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteTismemg at yahoo dot ca (with the words at and dot being symbols)
i have a question.....if you can't sell the pattern can you give them away?? i would LOVE to crochet these for my brother who LOVES Angry Birds!!!!!! i can not find better patterns, yours are THE BEST!!!
ReplyDeletei would pay for the pattern if needed!! PLEASE REPLY!

ReplyDeletethank you for creating these patterns, let me know!!
Indeed, we cannot purchase the patterns; however, there is a crafty crochet community solution... If you want to be sure the author is properly rewarded check out http://8pawscrochet.blogspot.com!
ReplyDeleteOops.. I m late =(
ReplyDeleteWould someone share the patten with me too? Thanks. wenhan_11@hotmail.com
I found your fantastic annoyed avians pattern about a month ago, bought them and made several, others needed for Christmas gifts you have by far the most accurate real looking birds that I could find. Am curious about the "powers that be" and why these were asked to stop being sold. The people with Angry Birds should be so pleased that everyone wants these. Do you think the Official Angry Birds people are going to issue their own crocheted patterns for their birds? Were they worried the crocheted ones would outsell their plush ones? I think it is great that 8pawcrochet is doing what she is doing. You know, it might be worth your time to write back to the people who asked you to stop, and offer to negotiate selling them your patterns, so you would win, and so would they. I tried to find an official FB page for the Angry Birds, but could not. I was going to ask them why they don't contact you and buy your patterns so everyone who wants to make them will be able to...they can still stipulate the pattern can only be used to make as gifts, not to sell. I am so sorry this happened to you. You are very talented, so please continue to write your great patterns, and try to see this as your patterns being so perfect they felt threatened by you. Hmm, which is why I think they should by the patterns from you, and I do not mean for the price of what others bought them for, but negotiate a price of steeling them your creativity. Good luck, I hope you continue to enjoy your creativity.
ReplyDeleteRae
Just checked out Etsy, found at least one selling a cardinal as Angry Bird, but all other were being sold on Etsy as Mad Birds, or Red Birds, or other such variations. Maybe it is the official name that was the problem. Check it out. It might be worth it to find out. I am just sorry you had to stop selling.
ReplyDeleteRae
I know when I got the cease and desist order from Etsy for my green pig hat they made a point of saying that I was not allowed to use the terminology or images related to the angry birds game. Etsy has just always been rather random about what items it removes and what they let slip through.
ReplyDelete@ Rae, From what I remember reading through her blog she had consulted an attorney who basically said Rovio's pockets were deeper than her's and to let it go... she did. I obviously felt bad as well and that's where I stepped in and started 8pawscrochet to make sure that some not-so-nice person didn't start trying to take the credit Karla deserves. Ironically, earlier this year, the Rovio people posted a picture of a crochet pig (using her pattern) on their FB page and were seemingly impressed by the design... apparently those that manage their FB page are not aware of what their legal department is doing! Unfortunately, I think all we can do is support her the best way we can, and that's to make sure that the patterns are not distributed without Karla being properly rewarded!
ReplyDeleteKarla, I would like to buy your Upset Birds pattern for my own enjoyment. Would you please sell Upset Birds pattern to me? I would never ask it for free for something you have designed & the time spent doing it. Please label it properly because I want UPSET birds. Thank you.
