A special day, another new pattern, and a giveaway

November 21 is a special day around here... it's our family's birthday. A lot of adoptive families also call it "airport day." Simply put, on this day two years ago, a little girl came through the doors of the international customs area at the Detroit International Airport and out family was instantly made complete.

That little bundle has come a long way from her first look at her new parents (and our first look at her). She's got her own personality... her own sense of style... and her own likes and dislikes.

Yup... that's her last night... jeans and a tutu. Twinkle Toes light-up shoes (from Sketchers),  a black cat chenille hoodie, and her daddy's favorite hat -- riding mommy's old hobby horse. My Korean kid with fashion tastes trending toward the Polish side of the family. God love her!

One thing Kaia tastes have always included are my amigurumi toys and the monkey (it comes out "mut-ney" when she says it) has always been her favorite. That's why I waited until today to publish Kaia's favorite of my designs... my Amigurumi Monkey pattern.

I hope you'll like this little guy as much as she does.

Since we're all smiles and celebrations today, I thought I'd do a little giveaway too. Two lucky winners will have a chance to take home copies of the monkey pattern... all you have to do is leave a message in the comments and tell me about a special day for you and your family. I'll draw the winners at random on Wednesday (11/24/2010) and announce in a blog post that day.

If you'd rather not take your chances (or wait), you can pick up the pattern today in the Ravelry pattern shop for only $3.00

Thanks for being some of the best blog readers in the world and good luck!

  1. i know its probably special for lots of families, but a special day for us is Christmas Eve... it's the day that I ended up moving back to WI to be with my family after living for a year on my own in CA... and its the same day i brought my boy into our little family, when he came to WI with me, after us meeting and becoming a couple in CA while i lived there. So, it's kind of viewed, by me anyways, as the day my family was all put back to together with all the pieces fitting. :) Sounds cheesy, but yeah. <3
oh and the monkey is adorable.

  2. I love your story, and the monkey! I'm a sucker for good adoption stories. March 19 is my family day, when I met my daughter in an empty white room in Guangzhou, China -- a 27-month-old shocked little bundle of righteous anger and terror, now a nearly-8-year-old second grader with a baby sister and a fondness for pandas, silly bandz, and storybooks. :)

  3. Loved reading your story! Congratulations, and Happy Family Day!

Our anniversary is a really special day for our family. I'm not always big on traditional holidays, but I think our anniversary is the important first step to all the rest of the special and important days, right?!!

Thanks for sharing your story! The monkey (or mut-ney) is precious!

  5. Our special day is April 27th, the day my hubby and I met, 33 years ago.

Mutual friends who were husband & wife, arranged a blind date for us and conned both of us into showing up....by lieing to us.

I was a widow with two teen & preteen kids. He was only 11 years older than my son. So I was far too old for him. But we were in love by the end of the evening.

Four months later we married, and discovered that there is truth in fairy tales, because we have lived happily ever after.

  8. Congratulations!

My special day is July 30th. It is the day (9 years ago) that I talked my boyfriend into dating me despite my impending trip and stay away at college for 4 years.

    Clearly it all worked out.

My special day is August 18th. It's the day my then boyfriend now husband told me he loved me. And I told him. First person (besides family) I'd ever said that to; and the last. :)

  13. almost three years ago we brought home Nessie a blue female Quaker parrot, our feathered family has since grown to three all together including one green Quaker parrot and one Rosie breasted cockatoo or Galah as us Aussies like to call them! my parrots are our babies as we're not having children. So we always celebrate our feathered friends adopted birthdays with lots of special treats for them

  15. Hello,

Congratulations on your special day! For my parents it was June 2 quite a few moons ago. I really want to give thanks to my parents and any parents that open up their hearts to an adoptive child, as I think my life would have been very different if it wasn't for my parents.

Kaia is so adorable. Her fashion sense is impeccable :P
