Pocket Trolls

The feeding frenzy is over (nearly) and it's back to the grind for me. That means laundry. Ugh.

Would you believe I actually found a pair of socks at the bottom of the pile with a Halloween pattern on them? No doubt they somehow got leftover from a previous load, but still a little alarming.

While I'm folding laundry I usually daydream. Our laundry room is in the basement (hence off limits to Kaia), so it's one of the few household tasks I get to do completely uninterrupted. It was while folding laundry one day that I first came up with the idea of pocket trolls.

I don't know what it is about the little buggers, but I really do enjoy making them. Unfortunately, they're not the most popular item in the shop. They sit and wait patiently while monkeys and dust kittens are shipped all over, waiting for that special kindred spirit who just understands.

I'm OK with it. I mean, I know I could go and market the heck out of the little guys, but somehow they're just never going to have the appeal that the dust kittens have.

What about the rest of you? Do you have a design that makes you happy but others just don't seem to get it? How did you "come to peace" with that? Do you make it anyhow?

I hope all of you are having a warm November weekend (and that those of you in the southern hemisphere are having a cool November weekend ;-)

XOXO, Karla

P.S. If you are feeling a bit lonely or uninspired in your own laundry room, there are a few really cute pocket trolls in the shop looking for homes right now ;-)

  1. I think they're cute as a button and don't understand why they aren't more popular. I'd like to ask you a question about making them, if you don't mind. How do you deal with furry yarns while crocheting? I'd love to use them in my crochet, but I can't see where to put the hook and I get everything so tangled I can't even frog it. Is there a trick to these yarns?

  3. @Amy and Lisa - Thank you for the kind words about the pocket trolls -- you're exactly who I mean by "kindred spirits!"

@Hoozieg - There are a couple of tricks to using the eyelash yarn. #1, you have to wind the ball the right way. Next time I wind up a ball of that kind of yarn, I'll post a picture for you.

#2, You have to just let go a bit. There is no way you're going to get the pattern exactly with eyelash yarn and amigurumi -- it's just impossible to see. The trick is to go more for the feel of the shape and increase/decrease as you need it -- rather than exactly as the pattern says.

Again, I'll try to get some pics for you next time I work with the eyelash yarn so you can have a better idea!

  4. I have a few dolls I've made like that....they sit and watch while others fly out the door.
It always makes me a lil sad for them but then I give them a cuddle and assure them there's always room for one more (in my house) :)
